Luke Wilkinson has said he knows he needs to continue working hard in training so he can earn a regular place in manager Wayne Burnett’s first team.

Speaking to the Official Site Wilkinson said he hoped he’d done just that for this weekends game away to Newport County.

‘The atmosphere in the dressing room is the same as always, everyone is happy, buzzing around the play, everyone is working. We’re not on that bad of a run, we just need to start picking up points and our home form speaks for itself.’

One thing for Wilkinson that we clearly need to improve on is that we definitely need to be more solid as a back line in games away from home, as we have a tendency to throw everyone forward in search of a goal, and he feels that if we are a little more patient and don’t give the opposition such a gap to exploit it will serve us better.

‘We just need to make it tight and put the home team under pressure and then they’ll make mistakes.’

Having normally played as a centre half, he also talks about enjoying his more advanced role of late even though he admits it’s taken some getting used to as it is very different in terms of how you approach the game.

As a defender you normally know there is nobody behind you, so you know where to look in terms of players pressing you, but being further forward you need to keep remembering 360 degrees when the on the ball, as people can sneak up behind you. It’s not totally alien to him though because he did play there as a youngster, and he’s happy to do the job, but he prefers his centre back role.
