Manager Wayne Burnett has said that Dagenham cannot afford to stand still this summer as we look to consolidate our improvement this season and push on further next term.

Speaking to the Official Site Burnett again reiterated how pleased he was to see us end the season with a victory over Cheltenham Town, as opposed to the three nil loss we had this time last year, and he feels that ending on a high as we did is the perfect preparation for the summer break now and then the return of pre season.

With that said, he still wasn’t happy with the way we conceded the two goals, but for him coming from behind in the game was a good boost as well.

As for next season though and his plans, he admits he already has a reasonable picture of what he thinks our playing staff will be.

‘I’d like to think so, we’ve assembled some targets, but it sometimes doesn’t always work out when we try to compete from a financial point. It can be difficult sometimes, we’ll have to wait and see what is out there. We will be bringing in players, there will be outs as well it’s inevitable, we are trying to strengthen the squad as much as we can.’

Hopefully those leaving the club will be our choice though as obviously we have a core at the club that he would like to maintain and build around.

‘We will be releasing some that are out of contract, but trying to keep some as well. Sometimes it’s the right time for players to move on for whatever reason. First and foremost, our club is at the front of my thoughts and what is best. We need to progress and strengthen, we can’t stand still next season and it’s something we are all really excited about.’

It also remains to be seen what offers we get for some players who have impressed this term, as obviously at this level everybody has their price, and as we know the club honour the commitment made to give individuals the chance to better themselves when tempting and suitable offers come in, so with the improvement we have shown, it could be a busy summer.
