Manager Wayne Burnett has admitted that he was absolutely gutted when he found out that Medy Elito had requested a transfer away from the club.

Following on from the release of the statement by the club following their agreement of a fee for the player with VVV Venlo, Burnett took to the Official Site to give his response to the unfortunate development.

‘Initially, Medy spoke to me and said there was some interest from a Dutch club and that he was interested in pursuing this. I was absolutely gutted. We offered him a new deal but it was more for personal reasons. He has a child now and he is living away from his child and partner who lives in Dusseldorf. As much as we tried to persuade him to stay, he wanted to spend more time with his child and family. When things like that come into place, it’s difficult to try and convince people to stay.’

Burnett goes on to say that with a year left on his deal obviously the club could’ve made him see out the final 12 months, but in doing that it can always turn things sour – especially given his reasoning for a move – so it was about getting the best deal possible for Dagenham moving forward.

‘We are all really disappointed to see him go, I felt he really come on in the latter part of last season, but I wish him well.’

Burnett will turn his attention to a tough ask, and that’s replacing Elito.

In other player news, the gaffer also confirmed that he was still interested in signing Jamie Cureton, despite him now training with Cheltenham Town again, but he is returning to us and will play a part in either the friendly against Wealdstone or Cheshunt before the gaffer decides whether to make a firm offer with rumours saying he now has another 12 month deal on the table from his club last season.

Southend manager Phil Brown has also confirmed that Gavin Hoyte is training with them at the moment, and will probably play a part in their game against Billericay Town.

Obviously Hoyte is out of contract this summer, and he does have an offer on the table, but the 24 year old has yet to give that a positive response.
